What do selectors actually test at trials?

Short answer

Across Australian pathway programs the recurring battery is a running test of some kind, a short sprint, a jump, and at senior levels a strength measure. Exactly which varies by sport and state — the AFL Draft Combine, a rugby league trial and a netball state squad all measure different things — but the shape is consistent.

The physical testing is the most preparable part of a trial, and it is the part most community athletes arrive having never practised.

Why

Selection is never only physical: skill, decision-making and how you play are what a selector is watching for most of the session. But the tested numbers are the part with a known protocol and a known date, which makes them the part you can train for deliberately.

Practise the protocol, not just the quality. A first attempt at a Yo-Yo test is almost always worse than a second, because pacing it is a skill. Running it cold on the day costs a level or two for no fitness reason at all.

Know your own numbers first. An athlete who has tested themselves knows whether they are close and what to work on. One who has not is guessing.

Train Smart matches a five-test battery to your sport — one conditioning test, two upper-body and two lower-body — and re-runs it every eight weeks, so the number on trial day is not the first one you have seen.

This is general information, not medical advice. Train Smart gives training and nutrition guidance for healthy adults. It is not a substitute for a doctor, physiotherapist or accredited dietitian. If you have an injury, a medical condition, or you are unsure whether an exercise is right for you, get it checked first. Every recommendation on this site is sourced.

A program that already answers this for you

Train Smart builds your week around your sport, your season and the days you actually train — with the weight to put on the bar on every set, and the reason each movement is there.
