Testing

Five numbers, every eight weeks

One conditioning test, two upper-body, two lower-body — chosen for your sport from what its own high-performance programs actually measure. Retested every eight weeks.

The problem

What goes wrong without it

Most people never test anything, so they have no idea whether the last three months did something. The ones who do test usually test the wrong things — a generic battery that measures qualities their sport does not care about, disconnected from the program that follows.

How it works

What the app actually does

Every program opens with a testing session and re-tests on the same battery every eight weeks. Five numbers:

  • One conditioning test — the one your own program is built around. A 2km plan tests a 2km. A Bronco plan tests a Bronco. Testing something the program is not training tells you nothing about whether it worked.
  • Two upper-body tests and two lower-body tests — what your sport’s own high-performance programs actually measure.

Then the results go back in. A tested one-rep max re-prices every related exercise across the program through a region calibration; a conditioning result resets the paces in your running plan.

In detail

The parts that matter

The battery follows the sport
AFL gets the Draft Combine reference points — 2km, running vertical, 20m sprint — with trap-bar deadlift and bench for the gym. Soccer de-emphasises barbell pressing entirely: nobody wins a header with a bench press. Netball measures landing and overhead strength. Gymnastics measures relative strength.
It adapts to your equipment
No barbell? The battery substitutes tests you can actually perform, rather than asking for a lift you have no way of doing.
A 3RM is accepted anywhere a 1RM is
Because nobody should be maxing out alone in a commercial gym. The conversion is done for you.
A testing day, not a testing week
The testing session displaces a session rather than being added on top — and the week it displaced can be restored.
24 tests in the library
Across conditioning, upper body and lower body — with the protocol for each written out, because a test run differently is not a comparison.
Who it is for

Is this you?

Anyone who wants to know whether their training is working, rather than assume it.

FAQ

Testing battery — questions

How often does Train Smart test?
Every eight weeks, on the same battery, starting with a testing session at the beginning of your program.
What if I cannot do one of the tests?
The battery substitutes based on the equipment you have. If you still cannot do one, skip it — the others still re-price the program.
Do I have to max out?
No. Enter a 3RM in the same field and the app converts it. A 3RM is safer, more repeatable and accurate enough for what the number is used for.
