Short answer

Queensland’s rugby league pathway runs through the Queensland Cup clubs. Each has a catchment of affiliated junior clubs, and its Cyril Connell Cup (under-17) and Mal Meninga Cup (under-19) teams are where talented juniors are picked. Thirteen Queensland clubs, plus Tweed Heads and the PNG Hunters, played the 2026 Cup; Wide Bay plays the under-17 competitions.

Junior representative football starts in February, so the pre-season is built through a hot, humid summer.

FAQ

Training in Queensland: questions

What ages are the Cyril Connell Cup and Mal Meninga Cup?
Under-17 and under-19. Older sources list the Mal Meninga Cup as under-18 and the Cyril Connell Cup as a former competition; both changed. The Hastings Deering Colts ended in 2023.
Which Queensland Cup club do I trial for?
The one whose catchment your junior club sits in. In Brisbane that is the Norths Devils or Redcliffe Dolphins in the north, Souths Logan Magpies in the south and Logan, and the Brisbane Tigers or Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the east and bayside. Every regional area has its own Cup club.
When does junior rep rugby league start in Queensland?
In February. In 2026 the Mal Meninga Cup finals started on 25–26 April, so the whole competition runs across the first months of the year.
