Footy training for Darwin & the Top End

Top End footy is played in heat and humidity no southern player has to deal with, on a calendar that is upside down. The program has to be told that — and trained for it.

Short answer

Darwin footy is played through the wet season. The Northern Territory Football League runs October to March — the reverse of the southern states — with men’s and women’s Premier Leagues and junior grades from under-9 to under-17.5. Clubs include Banks, Darwin, Jabiru, Nightcliff, Palmerston, PINT, Southern Districts, St Mary’s, the Tiwi Bombers, Wanderers and Waratah. The NT Academy is the talent pathway.

Because the app assumes a winter season, set your phase yourself: pre-season through the dry, in-season from October.

Your pathway

Which club your address belongs to

The NT Academy runs the Territory’s talent pathway.

NT Academy
Formerly NT Thunder Academy. Under-16 and under-18 boys’ and girls’ teams that play selected Talent League games — four in 2026 — without being eligible for the premiership.

The NTFL’s junior grades are under-17.5, under-15, under-13, under-11 and under-9, for boys and girls. AFL NT can confirm this season’s Academy programs.

Your first ten minutes

Set it up for Darwin

Four things, in the order the app asks them. None of them needs a coach.

Choose footy, then your team nights

Onboarding asks “When do you train with your team?” Pick your club nights — NTFL Men’s Premier League or wherever you play — and your gym and conditioning are scheduled around them, lighter the day after a big one. Tell it your equipment and any niggles and every exercise is fitted to both.

Match the program to your league’s start

The app’s footy calendar assumes a winter season (pre-season November to February, in-season March to September), which is backwards for the NTFL. Set your phase yourself — pre-season through the dry, in-season from October. The phase lives in Program → Your year.

Know your numbers on day one

Your first testing session is ready immediately: 2km time trial, Bench press 1RM, Max pull-ups, Trap-bar deadlift 1RM, Running vertical jump. It is re-run every 8 weeks, and the results re-price your training weights and conditioning paces.

Put your suburb on the board

In Social → Town, set where you train. Your minutes count toward that town’s weekly conditioning and strength top-10 boards — only the town is kept, never your location.

The year

The footy year in Darwin

April – July
Off-season and rebuild, then the pre-season build as the dry season arrives — the most comfortable months of the year to train hard.
August – September
Final preparation as the heat and humidity return. Practice matches and testing.
October – March
NTFL season, through the wet. Volume comes down, weights hold, and heat management is part of every week.

Conditions

The season is the wet season

NTFL games are played in the hottest, most humid months of the Top End year. Humidity stops sweat cooling you, so the same effort costs far more than it would down south. Train at first light or after dark, drink before you are thirsty, build intensity gradually as the build-up arrives, and follow the Sports Medicine Australia heat guidelines — revised specifically because risk in humid conditions was being misjudged.

For coaches

Coaching a side in Darwin?

A club licence is A$8 per player, per month (minimum 5), and every player on it gets full Train Smart membership at no cost to them. You write the block once, it lands in each player’s app, and the console shows who actually did it.
