Footy training for Melbourne players
More people play footy in and around Melbourne than anywhere else on earth, so every spot — in a senior side, a rep team or a Talent League list — is contested. The players who hold their place are the ones who turn up in April already fit.

Melbourne community footy is played through winter across leagues including the VAFA, EFNL, NFNL, SFNL, WFNL, EDFL and Outer East — the 2026 VAFA season ran from 17 April to 25 September. Talented juniors are zoned by home address to a Talent League club: the Western Jets, Calder Cannons, Northern Knights, Eastern Ranges, Oakleigh Chargers, Sandringham Dragons or Dandenong Stingrays.
Pre-season runs through summer, and Train Smart builds the program around exactly that calendar.

The pathway club, the leagues and the state-league sides change across the city. Pick the region you live in — your home address, not your junior club, is usually what decides it.

Set it up for Melbourne
Four things, in the order the app asks them. None of them needs a coach.
Choose footy, then your team nights
Onboarding asks “When do you train with your team?” Pick your club nights — Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) or wherever you play — and your gym and conditioning are scheduled around them, lighter the day after a big one. Tell it your equipment and any niggles and every exercise is fitted to both.
Match the program to your league’s start
The app treats March as the start of the AFL season. If your league does not start until mid-April, set your season phase yourself and stay in pre-season a few weeks longer. The phase lives in Program → Your year.
Know your numbers on day one
Your first testing session is ready immediately: 2km time trial, Bench press 1RM, Max pull-ups, Trap-bar deadlift 1RM, Running vertical jump. It is re-run every 8 weeks, and the results re-price your training weights and conditioning paces.
Put your suburb on the board
In Social → Town, set where you train. Your minutes count toward that town’s weekly conditioning and strength top-10 boards — only the town is kept, never your location.
What you start with, by the month you join
Every block is four weeks — three building, one deload — so a free month is one complete block.
The footy year in Melbourne
- October
- Off-season. Rest, then rebuild general strength.
- November – February
- Pre-season, through summer. Aerobic base first, then strength, then speed and power.
- Late March
- The Talent League season starts — the 2026 boys’ season opened on 21–22 March.
- Mid April – September
- Community season. Volume comes down, weights hold, and the job is backing up every Saturday.
A Melbourne pre-season is a summer pre-season
The build happens in the hottest months of the year, when a mild week can turn into a very hot day with little warning. Heat is a training load in its own right: move the hard session to early morning or evening rather than skipping it, and use the Sports Medicine Australia heat guidelines most clubs already follow. The season itself is winter — cold, heavy grounds and dark evenings, which is exactly when a proper warm-up earns its place.
Coaching a side in Melbourne?
A club licence is A$8 per player, per month (minimum 5), and every player on it gets full Train Smart membership at no cost to them. You write the block once, it lands in each player’s app, and the console shows who actually did it.
