Round engine test

Roadwork tells you how far you can jog. It does not tell you whether you can still throw in round eight. This test measures the thing that actually decides fights.

Short answer

The round engine test measures full-output rounds — 3 minutes on, 1 minute off — and records the last round at which you held output. Output is judged from outside, not by feel.

A round you paced tells you how long you can pace for, which is not the question.

What it measures

The point of the test

Sport-specific work capacity in the format the sport is contested in — rounds, not kilometres.

Why it is in the Train Smart battery: Whether your engine lasts as long as the fight does.

Protocol

How to run it

Full-output rounds on the bag or pads, 3 min on / 1 min off. Record the last round you held output on.

What you need
A bag or pads · A round timer · Someone watching output honestly
Benchmarks

What is a good score?

We are not going to publish a precise-looking table for this test. Reported ranges vary too much with protocol, equipment, level, age and sex for a single table to be honest, and most of the tables in circulation for it are uncited copies of each other.

The comparison that actually changes your training is against your own last score. That is not a consolation prize — it is what the monitoring literature supports, and it is what Train Smart does: re-test every eight weeks under the same conditions and let the trend, not the percentile, drive the program. The papers behind that are here.

Getting it right

What people get wrong

Most of the variation between two tests is protocol, not fitness. These are the faults that make one score incomparable to the last.

Pacing to survive.
The point is full output. A test you paced tells you how long you can pace for.
Judging it on how you feel.
Output is judged from outside — punch count, pad feedback, speed. Feel is a poor instrument at round six.
Improving it

How to actually move the number

Rounds are built with rounds. Interval work matched to the work-to-rest ratio you compete at, layered on an aerobic base that lets you recover in the minute between them. The base is the half that gets skipped and it is the half that decides round eight.

Train Smart has a plan for this exact test. Choose the “Fight / round engine” goal, enter your current result, your target and your timeframe, and the app calculates this week’s working pace and builds three different sessions around it — retesting every four weeks. How conditioning plans work.

Know your number. Now train for it.

Train Smart re-tests you every eight weeks on your sport’s own battery — and the results re-price your training weights and reset your conditioning paces automatically.
