Footy training for the Pilbara

Pilbara footy is played in two population centres hundreds of kilometres apart, by players many of whom work long shift rosters. A fixed five-day plan does not survive that; a program that adapts to the days you actually have does.

Short answer

Footy in the North Pilbara runs through the North Pilbara Football League: Dampier, Karratha Falcons and Karratha Kats, Wickham, Port Hedland Rovers and South Hedland. The region is governed by Country Football WA, and training has to work around the heat — and, for many players, around rosters.

Your pathway

Which club your address belongs to

Country football in WA is governed by Country Football WA, which runs the Country Championships — men’s, women’s and colts — and state country programs.

Your first ten minutes

Set it up for the Pilbara

Four things, in the order the app asks them. None of them needs a coach.

Choose footy, then your team nights

Onboarding asks “When do you train with your team?” Pick your club nights — North Pilbara Football League or wherever you play — and your gym and conditioning are scheduled around them, lighter the day after a big one. Tell it your equipment and any niggles and every exercise is fitted to both.

Match the program to your league’s start

The app periodises footy to the southern calendar. If your league’s season runs at a different time of year, set your phase yourself so the program builds toward your first game, not Perth’s. The phase lives in Program → Your year.

Know your numbers on day one

Your first testing session is ready immediately: 2km time trial, Bench press 1RM, Max pull-ups, Trap-bar deadlift 1RM, Running vertical jump. It is re-run every 8 weeks, and the results re-price your training weights and conditioning paces.

Put your suburb on the board

In Social → Town, set where you train. Your minutes count toward that town’s weekly conditioning and strength top-10 boards — only the town is kept, never your location.

Conditions

Tropical heat almost all year

The Pilbara is hot for most of the year and humid through the wet season, and humidity stops sweat cooling you. Train at first light or after dark, build intensity gradually, drink before you are thirsty, and follow the Sports Medicine Australia heat guidelines — they were revised specifically because humid conditions were being misjudged.

For coaches

Coaching a side in the Pilbara?

A club licence is A$8 per player, per month (minimum 5), and every player on it gets full Train Smart membership at no cost to them. You write the block once, it lands in each player’s app, and the console shows who actually did it.

FAQ

Footy in the Pilbara: questions

What clubs are in the North Pilbara Football League?
Dampier, Karratha Falcons, Karratha Kats, Wickham, Port Hedland Rovers and South Hedland.
How do I train for footy on a FIFO or shift roster?
Set the days you are actually available rather than a fixed week. Train Smart schedules gym and conditioning onto the days you choose and around team training, so a changing roster changes the plan instead of breaking it.
