The basketball pathway, and the athlete behind the jump
Everyone at a representative trial can play. The athletes who separate themselves are the ones who get off the floor quicker, stay in front of their player, and whose knees are not sore by the third game of a tournament weekend.

Australian basketball's pathway runs from domestic competition to junior representative and state teams, the Basketball Australia U16, U18 and U20 National Championships, the Centre of Excellence in Canberra, and senior NBL1 — the step below the NBL and WNBL. Physically, the athletes who progress jump higher, change direction faster and have the tendon capacity to do it hundreds of times a game.
The national championships run mid-year, on a different calendar to most domestic seasons.
The basketball pathway, step by step
Ages are approximate and details vary by state and year. Check your state body for this season’s trial dates and eligibility.
Domestic basketball
All ages. Association domestic competition, where every pathway starts.
Junior representative teams
Around 12–18. Club representative teams and state junior championships — the main selection environment for state teams.
State teams & National Championships
U16, U18, U20. Basketball Australia runs national championships in all three age groups, and they are where national talent identification happens.
Centre of Excellence
Scholarship. Basketball Australia's high-performance program in Canberra, whose athletes also compete in NBL1.
NBL1
Senior. The national semi-professional league and the senior step toward professional basketball.
NBL, WNBL & college
Professional. The professional leagues — and, for many Australian players, US college basketball in between.
What separates the athletes who move up
Selectors pick on skill and game sense. These are the physical qualities that decide whether that skill is on show — every week, and late in the game.
A standing and a running vertical
Vertical jump is the sport's defining number, so the battery measures both. The gap between them is a coaching signal: a big gap means you use a run-up well but lack raw strength; a small one means the opposite.
Landing, not just jumping
A jump program that ignores deceleration eventually stops you playing. Landing mechanics and eccentric strength come first.
Tendons for tournament weekends
The prehab loads the patellar tendon first, then the ankle and calf chain — the tissue that has to survive several games in a weekend.
Upper-body strength for contact
Bench and pull-ups in the battery, because finishing through contact and holding position are strength qualities.
What the program measures
The basketball battery in Train Smart: five tests, re-run every eight weeks, chosen to match what basketball programs actually measure. Each linked test page has the protocol and, where honest published ranges exist, indicative bands to see roughly where you sit.
| Test | Measures | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery 1 | Repeat-effort capacity with recovery, which is how a game is actually played. | level |
| Bench press 1RM | Upper-body pressing strength: the fend, the tackle, holding a bigger body off. | kg |
| Max pull-ups | Relative pulling strength — the best upper-body number there is for a field athlete. | reps |
| Running vertical jump | What a marking or rebounding contest actually asks for. | cm |
| Standing vertical jump | Lower-body power in its purest form, and the cheapest fatigue check you own. | cm |
The number that matters most is your own previous one. A selector sees one testing day; the program sees every eight weeks of your trend.
The year before selection
Many domestic seasons run through summer, while the national championships and NBL1 run through the middle of the year — so a representative player can be in-season for most of the calendar. Recovery management matters more here than in almost any other sport.
- Build window
- Whichever months you have no games — the only time a vertical jump genuinely moves. Strength first, then power.
- Before representative trials
- Convert to power early and hold it; jump and landing sports hold a power block longer than most.
- Tournaments
- Arrive fresh. Several games in a few days is a tendon test as much as a basketball one.
- In-season
- Volume down, prescribed weights hold, and the patellar and ankle work continues every week.
Where Train Smart fits, and where it does not
What it does: builds the physical side of the pathway — a basketball-specific week around your team nights and games, a weight in kilos on every working set, prehab for the injuries basketball causes, conditioning with a working pace, and a testing battery that tells you whether it is working.
What it does not do: coach your skills, watch your technique, or get you picked. No app can, and a page that tells you otherwise is selling something. It gives you the part of an elite program you can do on your own — so the time with your coach goes on the part you cannot.
