The cricket pathway, and the fitness that lasts a summer
Cricket is a skill sport with an injury problem hiding in it. Fast bowling is one of the most repetitive high-load actions in Australian sport, and the young bowlers who make it are very often simply the ones whose backs held up.

Australian cricket's pathway runs from junior club cricket through representative cricket and Premier Cricket to state underage teams at Cricket Australia's national championships — Under-19 male, Under-19 female, Under-17 male and Under-16 female — and on to state programs, domestic cricket, the WBBL and BBL. Physically, the players who progress, fast bowlers especially, can hold their action through a spell and stay free of back injury.
The national championships are played over the summer, in the middle of the season.
The cricket pathway, step by step
Ages are approximate and details vary by state and year. Check your state body for this season’s trial dates and eligibility.
Junior club cricket
All ages. Club and school cricket, where the pathway starts.
Junior representative cricket
Around 12–16. Regional and association representative teams and state underage carnivals.
Premier Cricket
Mid-teens upward. The top tier of club cricket in each state, where juniors play against senior and state players.
National Championships
U16 F, U17 M, U19 M, U19 F. Cricket Australia's four underage national championships, contested by state and territory teams.
State programs & domestic cricket
Senior. State academies and second-XI programs, then the Sheffield Shield and one-day domestic competitions for men and women.
BBL, WBBL & Australia
Professional. The professional domestic leagues and national selection.
What separates the athletes who move up
Selectors pick on skill and game sense. These are the physical qualities that decide whether that skill is on show — every week, and late in the game.
A back that survives bowling
Fast bowling loads the lumbar spine laterally, the lead hip and the bowling shoulder. The prehab is a loaded side plank, hip rotation and a sleeper stretch — trained for that load, not a generic mobility flow.
Holding the action through a spell
The bowling spell test records the over where run-up speed or accuracy drops. Conditioning is built around extending that, not around a 5km.
Rotational power
Batting and throwing are rotational, so the program trains rotational power rather than just bench and squat.
Strength built in winter
Cricket is a summer sport, so the build happens through the back half of winter — exactly when most cricketers do nothing.
What the program measures
The cricket battery in Train Smart: five tests, re-run every eight weeks, chosen to match what cricket programs actually measure. Each linked test page has the protocol and, where honest published ranges exist, indicative bands to see roughly where you sit.
| Test | Measures | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| 2km time trial | The aerobic benchmark your program is built around. | mm:ss |
| Bench press 1RM | Upper-body pressing strength: the fend, the tackle, holding a bigger body off. | kg |
| Max pull-ups | Relative pulling strength — the best upper-body number there is for a field athlete. | reps |
| Trap-bar deadlift 1RM | Whole-body pulling strength — the lift that carries over to acceleration. | kg |
| Standing vertical jump | Lower-body power in its purest form, and the cheapest fatigue check you own. | cm |
The number that matters most is your own previous one. A selector sees one testing day; the program sees every eight weeks of your trend.
The year before selection
Underage national championships are played over the summer, in the middle of the season — so strength and bowling capacity have to be built in winter and maintained through them, not peaked for in December.
- April – July
- Off-season. Strength, trunk and hip capacity, and time off bowling.
- August – September
- Pre-season. Bowling volume builds gradually alongside speed-endurance conditioning. Test on arrival, retest after eight weeks.
- October – March
- In-season. Weights hold, prehab continues and training load is watched week to week.
- Championships
- In the middle of the season. Arrive fresh and do not chase fitness in the weeks before.
Where Train Smart fits, and where it does not
What it does: builds the physical side of the pathway — a cricket-specific week around your team nights and games, a weight in kilos on every working set, prehab for the injuries cricket causes, conditioning with a working pace, and a testing battery that tells you whether it is working.
What it does not do: coach your skills, watch your technique, or get you picked. No app can, and a page that tells you otherwise is selling something. It gives you the part of an elite program you can do on your own — so the time with your coach goes on the part you cannot.
