The Australian football pathway, and the physical edge
Football is the most technical of the football codes, and nobody gets into an academy because of a gym program. But the players who stay in one are the ones who can still press in the 80th minute and who do not lose a season to their hamstrings.

Australian football's player pathway runs from community club football into NPL club Skill Acquisition Programmes, then NPL youth teams from under-13 and A-League club academies, to senior NPL and the A-Leagues. Technical ability decides selection, but at every step the players who progress can repeat high-intensity efforts late in a game and stay free of hamstring and groin injuries.
The Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test is the fitness benchmark most commonly used in football.
The soccer pathway, step by step
Ages are approximate and details vary by state and year. Check your state body for this season’s trial dates and eligibility.
Community club football
All ages. MiniRoos, then community club football. Most players stay here, and most talented players start here.
Skill Acquisition Programme (SAP)
Around 9–12. NPL clubs' skill programs for younger players. Technical development is the whole point; physical training should be play.
NPL youth & A-League academies
Under-13 upward. NPL youth teams and A-League club academies. The training load rises sharply, and so does the injury risk that comes with it.
National youth teams
Under-17 / Under-20. The Joeys and Young Socceroos, the Junior and Young Matildas — selected from the academy and NPL system.
Senior NPL & the A-Leagues
Senior. State NPL first teams and the A-League Men and A-League Women.
What separates the athletes who move up
Selectors pick on skill and game sense. These are the physical qualities that decide whether that skill is on show — every week, and late in the game.
Repeat high-intensity running
A game is a sprint, a walk, a jog and another sprint for ninety minutes. The Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test measures exactly that, and it improves with an aerobic base first and repeat-effort intervals on top.
The first five metres
Acceleration decides who gets to the ball. Barbell pressing is de-emphasised in the program for that reason — lower-body strength and short, fresh sprints are where the money is.
Hamstrings that do not tear
Hamstring strain is the most common injury in football, and eccentric hamstring strength is its best-evidenced modifier. The battery measures your Nordic break point for that reason.
Groins that survive cutting
The Copenhagen adductor programme reduces groin problems in football, and it is prescribed for the football codes on the same evidence.
What the program measures
The soccer battery in Train Smart: five tests, re-run every eight weeks, chosen to match what soccer programs actually measure. Each linked test page has the protocol and, where honest published ranges exist, indicative bands to see roughly where you sit.
| Test | Measures | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery 1 | Repeat-effort capacity with recovery, which is how a game is actually played. | level |
| Max pull-ups | Relative pulling strength — the best upper-body number there is for a field athlete. | reps |
| Med-ball chest throw | Upper-body power rather than strength — the speed end of pressing. | m |
| Standing vertical jump | Lower-body power in its purest form, and the cheapest fatigue check you own. | cm |
| Nordic hamstring break point | Eccentric hamstring strength — the best-evidenced hamstring injury screen there is. | ° |
The number that matters most is your own previous one. A selector sees one testing day; the program sees every eight weeks of your trend.
The year before selection
Community and NPL football run through winter in Australia — the app follows the Australian calendar, not the European one.
- October – January
- Off-season. The block for strength and for hamstring and groin capacity, with no match load to recover from.
- February – March
- Pre-season. Aerobic base into repeat-sprint work; test on arrival, retest after eight weeks.
- April – September
- In-season. Volume comes down, Nordics and Copenhagens stay, and the goal is playing every week.
- Trials
- Trial periods vary by club and state. Arrive fresh — the work that shows up at a trial was done months before it.
Where Train Smart fits, and where it does not
What it does: builds the physical side of the pathway — a soccer-specific week around your team nights and games, a weight in kilos on every working set, prehab for the injuries soccer causes, conditioning with a working pace, and a testing battery that tells you whether it is working.
What it does not do: coach your skills, watch your technique, or get you picked. No app can, and a page that tells you otherwise is selling something. It gives you the part of an elite program you can do on your own — so the time with your coach goes on the part you cannot.
